Macal River-Dugout Canoeing { 10 images } Created 21 Nov 2010

The Macal River runs untamed through the primitive jungle of western Belize along the Guatemalan border. Mostly unaccessible, except via water craft, it is home to tribes of Mayan descendents who still hunt iguana as a food source, fish with hand lines, wash their cloths by beating them on the rocks and maneuver the waterways with hand-carved dugout canoes crafted from Guanacaste trees.
